Did you know that just because a sunscreen label says “reef safe” does not mean that it actually is?
ABOT’s Sunscreen Initiative has been educating community members and visitors to Antigua and Barbuda to the toxic effects that some of these chemicals have on you and on our marine environment.
Our posters encourage people to use non-nano zinc oxide and they help consumers by showing where on-island they can purchase these mineral sunscreens.
We also encourage hotels, tour operators and watersports shops to ask their guests to only use safe sunscreens by displaying our posters and by statements in their confirmation emails.
Through community education and support, we are hoping that Antigua and Barbuda will join the growing list of international communities who have already banned these toxic chemical sunscreens.
Below is our poster that we are distributing across the island.
