Youth Eco-Diver

There are a growing number of local students interested in pursuing a career path in marine science and the wider marine industry. The Antigua and Barbuda Ocean Trust (ABOT) works with teenagers to help them to pursue their passions by running and funding certified diving courses within its Youth Eco-Diver Programme. See https://abocean.org/antigua-youth-diver-programme/

Local students who may otherwise be prevented from entering these careers by financial circumstances are encouraged to take part.

All instruction will be carried out by fully qualified PADI Dive Instructors on the islands. After completing their PADI Open Water Diver certification, participants will join a year-long (one day a month) course where they will receive education on the marine environment and marine conservation in Antigua & Barbuda, They will also continue to dive on a regular basis and complete their Advanced Open Water Diver training.

After completing the course, students will be invited to join our Volunteer Dive Group to participate in dive group activities such as cleaning reefs, working on coral restoration and cleaning the coral nurseries. Our Volunteer Dive Group members will also be available to act as mentors where appropriate.

The Open Water Course and further education will take place on weekends.

Each course will consist of 6 students, and we will run at least two courses a year.

Eligibility and Application Process

Applicants should be competent swimmers aged between 14 and 21.

Applicants under the age of 18 will need the approval of a parent or guardian

Final applicants will undertake an interview with our marine biologist and diving instructors

During the interview session each applicant will be asked to take a swim test to ensure that they can participate in the course. This requires them to:

1. Swim 200 meters/yards without stopping. There is no time limit for this, and they may use any swimming strokes they want.

2. Float and tread water for 10 minutes, again using any methods they want.

In both cases the test is to take place in a swim suit without aids in open water.

If they are currently unable to swim but wish to join this course in the future, then potential students can contact us, as we have the names of swimming coaches, some of whom may be able to offer lessons for free for potential students.

The Program is designed for students who for financial reasons may be prevented from entering careers where being able to dive is a useful prerequisite
